Mouth Articulation Cards
This set of fourteen 4"x6" cards includes all consonant sounds, arranged according to the articulatory gestures used to form each sound. These cards are used explicitly in our Pathways to Reading Homeschool program but can also be used to build a sound wall.
Our instruction utilizes awareness of mouth movements. This awareness helps to activate connections that help children identify written words and secure them in memory. (Scientific Studies of Reading, vol. 7, 2003,Phonemic Awareness Instruction: Contribution of Articulatory Segmentation to Novice Beginners’ Reading and Spelling. M. Castiglioni-Spalten and L. Ehri).
Each card also incorporates embedded mnemonics. David Kilpatrick says in his book Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties, "Using pictures in which the letter can be logically or meaningfully embedded appears to be more effective than learning letters by themselves or with non embedded keyword pictures."
