One of the first steps to teaching a child to read is to teach each individual sounds, also called phonemes. Consonants sounds and short vowels are typically the first and easiest sounds to start with. Pathways to Reading Homeschool emphasizes mouth articulation when teaching each sound. These sound mazes offer a chance for your child to practice identifying the pictures that begin with the same targeted sound.
These Sound Mazes are part of the Reinforcement Activity Book in our Basic Foundational Reading program. Because they might be a helpful tool for parents and teachers not using our complete program, we are also offering them as a separate printable, which can be used at home, classrooms, or tutoring!
Directions for Sound Mazes for Kindergarten Printable
The student will…
- Begin at the the word “Start.” Draw the child’s attention to the mouth articulation for the featured sound. Ask questions, such as, “Does this sound use the lips or the tongue? Does it use the front of the tongue or the back of the tongue? Is the sound loud or is it quiet and whispery (voiced or unvoiced)?”
- Have the child identify each picture and say it aloud.
- Stretch each picture word and determine whether the initial sound in that word matches the isolated sound you are currently focusing on.
- If the picture word begins with the selected sound, instruct him/her to either draw a line or place a dot on that box.
- Proceed through the maze until you reach the corresponding letter.
Please note: Movement in the maze will be vertical or horizontal only. Your child will not travel diagonally through the maze.
